Robert Gwin of Montgomery captured the 40th Chesapeake Energy Texas State Open with rounds of 66-65-68-66 for a four-round total 15-under par, 265. With solid rounds of golf all week, Gwin made six birdies and two bogeys during the final round to capture the Championship. Gwin played college golf at Sam Houston State University and currently has conditional status on the Nationwide Tour. Gwin will take home a check for $26,000.00 for his first place win.
Trailing one shot behind in second place was Bobby Massa of Grand Prairie who was competing in his first event as a professional with rounds of 70-65-63-68 for a 14-under par, 266. Massa, who was in the hunt all day, bogeyed the 72nd hole. A par would have forced a sudden death playoff.
Tied for third place was Bryan Baker of Tyler, Matthew Rosenfeld of Plano and Jeremy Alcorn of Irving with a 13-under par, 267. In sixth was Joseph Totah of Palestine with a total of 12-under par, 268. Shawn Stefani of Baytown came in seventh with a total of 11-under par, 269, and competing for his first time as a professional, Chris Ward of McKinney took eighth with a total of ten-under par, 270.
Blaine Weiterman of Overton shot five-under par, 275 to claim the low amateur title. Weiterman played at Tyler Junior College for two years and is currently playing golf for Sam Houston State University. He qualified for the Texas State Open at the Second Chance Qualifier held at The Cascades Club on July, 6.
The 72-hole stroke play event consisted of 144 contestants. 51 professionals and 6 amateurs survived the 141 (+1) cut after 36-holes. All four rounds were contested at The Cascades, a 6,918 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler. The total purse was $135,000.00 with $26,000.00 awarded to Gwin.
