The Texas State Open has crowned many past and future stars over its 39-year history. Past Champions who have gone on to compete on the PGA TOUR include Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino, Jeff Maggert, Blaine McCallister, Brad Lardon, Kris Cox, Kelly Grunewald and Cameron Beckman. The purse has steadily grown over the years and the $135,000.00 purse slated for 2010 makes the Texas State Open one of the largest state open purses in the nation.
Three-time Texas State Open Champions include: Ben Crenshaw (’75, ’79 and ’80), Jeff Maggert (’88, ’90 and ’94) and Kelly Grunewald ('02, '05, '06). Lee Trevino leads the list of those with two Texas State Open victories. 2008 Champion, Martin Piller has his sights set on a different page of Texas State Open history books. Piller won low amateur honors in 2006 and 2007 before turning professional in 2008. Piller would be the first player to capture low amateur honors two years in a row and then successfully defend his Championship title.
The 40th Chesapeake Energy Texas State Open is set for Thursday, July 15 - Sunday, July 18 at The Cascades Club in Tyler, Texas. Championship week will once again feature the Joyce Crane Texas State Open Pro-Am on Tuesday, July 13 at The Cascades Club in Tyler, Texas.
