Garland, TX –Cindy Figg-Currier of Austin, Texas followed her two-under par, 68 in round one of the Texas Women’s Open with a three-over par, 73 in round two for a total of one-over par, 141 to capture the title by one shot over Lilly Kobayashi of Santa Monica, California and Katy Harris of Humble, Texas, both finishing at two-over par, 142. Figg-Currier got off to a rough start with bogies on holes #1 and #2, but had a quick recovery with an eagle on hole #3 to get back to two-under par for the tournament. With bogies on holes #15 and #16, Figg-Currier was still able to hold off the field with a two-over par, 37 on the back nine. Figg-Currier will take home a check for $4,000.00 for her victory.
Victoria Vela (a) of Mansfield, Texas drained a 33-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole against Amy Ruengmateekhun (a) of Garland, Texas to capture the Low Amateur award. Ruengmateekhun (a) finished as the second place amateur followed by a tie for the third place amateurs, Kristin Walla (a) of Aspen, Colorado and Paige Gibson (a) of Carrollton, Texas.
The 36-hole stroke play event featured a field of 120 top playing professionals and amateurs competing at Eastern Hills Country Club located in Garland, Texas. This year is the 10th anniversary that Eastern Hills Country Club, which featured a 6,104-yard, par 70 layout, has played host to the Texas Women’s Open.
The 38 professionals in the field competed for a share of the $19,300.00 purse with the professional champion taking home $4,000.00 for first place. The 80 amateurs competed for crystal trophies for those who finished in the top three as well as gift certificates for those who finished in the top five.
The 2010 Texas Women’s Open at Eastern Hills Country Club is benefiting the New Beginning Center in Garland. The center exists to foster an environment of safety, support and respect for families affected by domestic violence. The vision of the New Beginning Center is to promote social change that will lead to the elimination of domestic violence.
