Perry Arthur Captures Fifth Section PGA Professional Championship

Perry Arthur, teaching professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, won his fifth NTPGA Professional Championship in a four hole playoff. Arthur was joined in the playoff by Jeff Hughes, assistant golf professional at Twin Rivers Golf Club, and Cameron Doan, head golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club.

Doan made bogey on the first playoff hole while Arthur and Hughes both made par. Arthur and Hughes battled for two more holes with each making par. On the fourth playoff hole Arthur sank his birdie putt on the 238-yard par 3, fifteenth hole to capture the title. Arthur (70-67), Hughes (66-71) and Doan (69-68) all finished at 5-under par for the Championship after 36-holes. Hughes and Doan both birdied the eighteenth hole to secure their spot in the playoff against Arthur, whom at the time was the leader in the clubhouse.

Arthur won his first NTPGA Professional Championship in 1992 with his most recent victory in 2004. Arthur will lead ten PGA professionals from the Northern Texas Section to the PGA Professional National Championship at Twin Warriors Golf Club and Santa Ana Golf Club, Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico to be held on June 28 – July 1, 2009.

Joining Arthur will be Cameron Doan, head golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club, Jeff Hughes, assistant golf professional at Twin Rivers Golf Club, Lindy Miller, director of golf at Mira Vista Country Club, Travis Johns, assistant golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club, Larry Bryan, head golf professional at Big Spring Country Club, Jamie Elliot, director of instruction at Bridlewood Golf Club and Troy Lewis, director of instruction at Prestonwood Country Club. Bruce Smith, assistant golf professional at Fazio at Stonebriar and Vince Jewell, assistant golf professional at Brook Hollow Golf Club finished in the top 20 in the 2008 PGA Professional Championship at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia to earn exempt status into the 2009 PGA Professional Championship.

The top 20 players from the 2009 PGA National Professional Championship will compete in the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minnesota.

This 36-hole NTPGA Section major championship is the third of the four individual stroke play championships that comprise the Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Player of the Year Points Challenge, as well as a qualifier for points to make the 2008 Texas Joe Black Cup team.

Titliest/FootJoy/ Cobra, Club Car and the PGA Tour are the proud sponsors of the event that was conducted at Mira Vista Country Club on the 6,967 yard par 71 layout located in Fort Worth, Texas. The Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship featured 110 Section members who competed for the $27,500.00 purse with Arthur taking home $3,500.00.

Dean Larsson Captures Second Consecutive Assistant Championship Title

Dean Larsson, an assistant golf professional at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, dominated the 2008 Northern Texas Section (NTPGA) TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Championship and earned a spot in the field at the 2008 TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA National Assistant Professional Championship with a 66-69 – 135 (9-under par) total. Larsson’s five shot victory came as no surprise in the blistering heat as he won the Assistant Championship in 2007 by three shots. Larsson will lead three other Section PGA Assistant Professionals in the 2008 TaylorMade–adidas Golf PGA National Assistant Professional Championship scheduled for October 30 – November 2, 2008 at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Qualifying along with Larsson were three Preston Trail Golf Club assistant professionals. Jeffrey Barton shot a total of 4-under par, 140 to finish alone in second place. Tied for third place were Brian Ricketts and Travis Johns with totals of 3-under par, 141. The National Championship field will be comprised of 120 of the top assistant/apprentice professionals from each of the 41 PGA of America Sections.

The NTPGA TaylorMade-adidas Golf Assistant Championship also served as a team qualifier for the 2008 James P. Jordan Cup Matches to be held on November 3-4, 2008 at Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kansas. This “Ryder Cup” style event is conducted annually between a team of twelve PGA assistant golf professionals from the Northern Texas Section and the South Central Section of the PGA of America. Larsson earned an exemption onto the NTPGA James P. Jordan Cup Team for his victory.

The NTPGA TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Championship was conducted at Lantana Golf Club, a 7,147-yard par 72 course located in Lantana, Texas. TaylorMade-adidas Golf is the title sponsor of the Championship. A field of 59 assistant golf professionals competed for a share of the $6,000.00 purse. Larsson took home $720.00 for his victory.

Cameron Doan Successfully Defends His Western Championship Title

Cameron Doan, head golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club, began the final round tied for first place at 2-under par 70 with Lindy Miller, director of golf at Mira Vista Country Club and Greg Antunes, head golf professional at Stonetree Golf Club. Doan carded a 3-under par 69 (34-35) in his final round to successfully defend his title and claim the 2008 Callaway Golf Western Championship.

The leaders were pressured early with a strong push by Paul Norris, assistant golf professional at Dallas Country Club. Norris teed off an hour and twelve minutes before the leaders and quickly erased a seven shot deficit by carding a front nine 6-under par 30 to move within one shot of the lead. He continued his fine play on the back nine to close with a 3-under par 33 with birdies on holes 17 and 18. His final round total of 63 set the pace for the Championship with a two day total of 4-under par 140 (77-63). Norris’s great effort came up one stroke shy but good enough for him to finish alone in second place.

Antunes closed with final round of 1-under par 71 to finish in third place with a two day total of 3-under par 141 (70-71). Miller finished alone in fourth place with a final total of 2-under par 142.

Doan becomes the only golf professional to win the Callaway Golf Western Championship three times in its ten year history. Doan’s previous titles came in 2002 at San Angelo Country Club and in 2007 at Midland Country Club.

Other tournament notes, Angela Ditmore, an assistant golf professional at Green Tree Country Club, won the Callaway Golf Bonus Pool, taking home $750.00. Matt Moore, assistant golf professional at River Crest Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas made a hole-in-one on the par three eighth hole with a 5-iron from 204 yards.

The Callaway Golf Western Championship was conducted by the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America and was presented by Midland Country Club and West Texas National Bank. The Championship venue was Midland Country Club in Midland, Texas, a 7,268-yard, par 72 layout. The 78-player field comprised of golf professionals from the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America competed for a $20,000.00 purse, with Doan taking home $2,500.00.

Henderson Claims His Third E-Z-GO Eastern Championship victory

Michael Henderson found himself in a tie for first place at 2-under par with Bruce Smith, assistant golf professional at Stonebriar Counrty Club and Perrry Arthur, teaching professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course after the completion of the final round of the Championship. Henderson, head golf professional at Stevens Park Golf Course birdied his first playoff hole to capture his third E-Z-GO Eastern Championship title in the last four years. Henderson was only one shot behind overnight leader Travis Johns, assistant golf professional at Preston Trail Golf Club. A 1-under par round of 71 (36-35) was good enough to get him into the playoff. Henderson also captured the Championship in 2005 and 2006.

This 36-hole NTPGA major championship is the first of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Player of the Year Points Challenge, and serves as a qualifier for the 2008 Texas Joe Black Cup and James P. Jordan Cup teams. The E-Z-GO Eastern Championship featured a field of 100 NTPGA Members and Apprentices competing at Sherrill Park Golf Course (#1) in Richardson.

The golf professionals competed for a share of the $31,500.00 purse with the champion taking home $4,100.00 for first place. The E-Z-GO Eastern Championship was presented by Bridgestone Golf, Byron Nelson Apparel, Gill Barnett Golf, Heritage Creations, Pepsi-Cola and Pukka Headwear.
