CARROLLTON, Texas - No. 11 seed Jon Antunes, PGA director of instruction at Heart of Texas Golf Academy, has won the 2021 Yamaha Golf-Car Company | Srixon / Cleveland Golf Match Play Championship.
Antunes bested No. 13 Chris Brown, PGA in the final match at Maridoe Golf Club. He won 3&2 on the 16th hole after sinking an 18 foot putt for birdie. Putting was the story of the day for Antunes, who made seven putts that were over 15 feet. Knowing it was going to be a tough match, Antunes actually changed his putting style 45 minutes before the match began.
“I was on the putting green this morning, and working on the same drill I have been working on and not having much success, so I thought hey I’ll try another grip,” said Antunes.
“The win means a lot for me personally because competitive golf has looked a lot different for me as my kids have gotten older. I spend a lot of time with my family, that’s just what I like to do. I have played golf zero times between any events this year.”
This marks Antunes’ second individual major win with the Northern Texas PGA. He heads home to Waco with a $7,500 check. Brown is a caddie on the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions and currently caddies for Matt Gogel. Brown earned $4,000 as runner-up.
The Yamaha Golf-Car Company | Srixon / Cleveland Golf Match Play Championship was conducted October 5-7 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, a 7,136-yard, par 72 layout. The Championship was presented by Adventures In Golf, AT&T Byron Nelson, Cyber Group and PGA TOUR.
