Thienna Huynh (a) earns Low Amateur Honor

GRAPEVINE, Texas (May 31) – Maddie Szeryk claimed the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open by one stroke at Grapevine Golf Course. Szeryk fired rounds of 68-67–135 to finish the shortened championship at 9-under-par.

Starting the second round two strokes off the lead and in the penultimate group, Szeryk knew she needed to get off to a quick start, and that she did. With two birdies in the first four holes and a chip-in eagle on the 9th green, Szeryk made the turn at 7-under-par, but was still two strokes back of Hailee Cooper.

Coming down the final two holes Szeryk had gained a one stroke lead, but failed to get up and down on the 17th and made bogey. Needing to birdie the par-5 18th hole to regain the lead, Szyerk hit a wedge shot to 10-feet and drained the putt for birdie.

“I haven’t won in a long time, so it was great to be under the gun. A few mistakes here and there, but made a great birdie on the last hole to get myself a chance,” said Szeryk. “It’s my first big paycheck of the year.”

Szeryk, who is from Allen, made 20 starts on the LPGA Tour last season and made 10 cuts. She is currently ranked 300 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. Today she earned $17,500, a record for the Texas Women’s Open.

Low Amateur Thienna Huynh (a) just completed her sophomore collegiate season. Carding rounds of 67-70–1337, 7-under-par, Huynh (a) finished four strokes ahead of the next amateur and finished in fourth place for the overall Championship.

Speaking about why she chose to play in the Championship Huynh (a), a Georgia native said, “I have a lot of good friends in Texas and I hadn’t seen them in a while. I love coming to Texas.”

“The maintenance team did a really really good job making sure that the golf course was in good shape, especially with the storms that came in. The greens were rolling really great, it was perfect out there.”

The Championship was shortened from 54 to 36 holes and no cut was made after battling weather all week in Grapevine, including a six hour and 15 minute delay on Thursday. The Ewing Automotive Group Legends of the LPGA Division was able to complete play on Thursday evening. Angela Stanford finished at the top of that division after rounds of 66-71.

The Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open featured a record total purse of $150,000 thanks to the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Ewing Automotive Group. $75,000 was designated for the 24 player Legends of the LPGA Division and the other $75,000 was for the 132 player Championship Division. The 2024 Championship was the first of three years that the Texas Women’s Open will be conducted at Grapevine Golf Course.

DALLAS, Texas (April 1) – Brian Norman, PGA instructor at Lakewood Country Club, and Bobby Massa (a) fought through a 3-hole playoff to win the 2025 Srixon and Nike Pro-Scratch title. It marks their third victory in four attempts. Starting the final round one-stroke behind the lead, they carded the second lowest round of the day at 8-under-par, 32-32–64. Their five birdies on the back-nine was enough to get them into a playoff. Joining them in the playoff was Peyton Coursey, Associate at Dallas Athletic Club, and David Schultz (a). The pair turned in the lowest round of the day and the Championship at 9-under-par, 31-32–63. Both teams played in the favorable morning conditions, which featured tame winds, compared to the gusty afternoon conditions. This also left them both with lengthy waits to see if their scores would hold up through the afternoon wave. They did. The playoff for the Open Division title began on the par-4, 18th hole. Both teams made par and they proceeded to the par-5, 3rd hole. Two birdies on the par-5, 3rd hole led both teams back to the 18th tee. All four players hit the fairway. Norman was the first to hit his approach and he hit the green. Then the pair from Dallas Athletic Club both missed the green. Finally, Massa (a) hit his approach to 15-feet, just off the green, long left of the hole. Massa (a) was the last to attempt his birdie opportunity and stepped up to the downhill left-to-right putt with a chance to win the Championship. Tracking the whole way, it dropped and the pair had won their third Pro-Scratch title. “We got off to a kind of slow start, but got on the back and got hot and made some birdies,” said Norman about their round this morning. “We were just ham and egging it,” added Massa (a). “We think very similarly about golf so it’s easy to bounce ideas back and forth,” said Massa (a) about the three-time winning duo. The team earned $2,000 ($1,000 each) for the victory today.
