LONGVIEW, TX –
Danny Coughlan, PGA head professional at Abilene Country Club, and Christopher Brown, caddie on the PGA TOUR, share the lead after round one of the 2017 Joyce Crane Section Championship. The two fired opening rounds of 3-under par 67 to lead the field heading into tomorrow’s final round. Brown will be looking to capture his third career Section individual major championship, already capturing the Western Championship earlier this year, while Coughlan will be looking to capture his first Section individual major title.
One shot off the pace at 2-under 68 are three competitors including Ben Kern, PGA head professional at Diamondback Golf Course, who captured the Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship in August as well as Greg Gregory, PGA assistant professional at Hidden Creek Golf Course, and Jeff Barton, PGA director of instruction at Preston Trail Golf Club.
The Joyce Crane Section Championship is the fourth and final individual stroke play major championship of the 2017 season to earn points towards the Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge presented by Adventures In Golf. The Eastern Championship, Western Championship, NTPGA Professional Championship and Section Championship all serve as qualifiers for the year-end Yamaha Golf-Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Match Play Championship. The Player of the Year Points Challenge also serves as a qualifier for the 2017 NTPGA Texas Joe Black Cup and Levy Cup teams.
The Joyce Crane Section Championship also includes a Senior Division that is comprised of 23 professionals aged 50 and older who are competing for a separate $9,850 purse and are playing from a modified yardage. The Senior Division champion will take home $1,350. Dick Goetz, PGA Life Member, and Stuart Hendley, PGA director of instruction at Grapevine Golf Course, currently share the lead of the Senior Division at 1-under par 69.
The Joyce Crane Section Championship, presented by AT&T Byron Nelson, Cutter & Buck, Ewing Automotive Group, PGA TOUR, PRG Americas and Sterling Cut Glass, is being conducted at Pinecrest Country Club, a 6,513-yard, par 70 course located in Longview, Texas. The Open Division field consists of 67 PGA professionals from the Northern Texas Section of the PGA of America competing for a $28,650 purse. The champion will take home $4,000 and the prestigious title of Northern Texas PGA Section Champion. Along with the trophy and prize money, the champion also earns an exemption into the 2018 PGA TOUR AT&T Byron Nelson.
